Sockeye Salmon

Sockeye or Red Salmon Can Quickly Fill A Cooler!

Some of our guests enjoy a distraction during their trip and want to spend a few hours fishing for Sockeye Salmon.   These salmon can be found in special pools in and around the Nushagak and can be a lot of fun to catch.

Sockeye Salmon are also known as Red salmon and are the main target of commercial fishermen.  These commercially harvest fish are then processed and are the type of salmon you find in your grocery store back home.

They are delicious eating and can be found in huge numbers on the Nushagak throughout the fishing season.   The Sockeye is a relatively small salmon and generally dont grow over 6 pounds.

When Sockeye enter the river they are Chrome colored but quickly change in color to a bright red.   As they spend more time in the fresh water their heads will become green in color and their jaw becomes hooked.   When you bring a Red to the boat there is no doubt what you have.
