Silver Salmon
The Arial Fight Of A Nushagak Silver Salmon Is Something You Will Never Forget
What Silver Salmon give up in size, when compared to a King, they make up in fight. These fish generally run from 10-12 pounds and they are hands down the most agressive salmon in the river.
Instead of heading to the bottom of the river to play tug of war with the fisherman, Silvers take their battle to the air with spectacular jumps and constant top water thrashing. You will get use to hearing your drag sing when fishing for Alaska Silver Salmon.
Silvers tend to come in shortly after the King Salmon run and their numbers are impressive. If a fisherman wants to take advantage of the long hours of daylight they can easily catch 100+ Silver Salmon in a day if they hit the run right.
Both King Salmon and Silver Salmon are excellent table fare. The King Salmon has a bit more oil in it than a Silver Salmon. When cooking Silvers you want to use butter or another moister replacement when cooking on a open grill.
One of the most fun ways you can fish for Silvers is with a fly pole and a fly called a flesh fly or “bunny”. These flys mimick the flesh of King Salmon which the Silvers are gourging themselves with as they travel up the Nushagak.
